Rheem Manufacturing Company is a global leader in the production of residential and commercial HVAC and water heating equipment. Founded by Richard “R. S.” Rheem and Donald “D. L.” Rheem with financial assistance from William “W.K.” Rheem, it first manufactured steel drums in 1925 in partnership with Pacific Galvanizing Company. The Rheem Manufacturing Company bought Pacific Galvanizing and Republic Steel in 1930, allowing Rheem to break into the water heating business.
In 1954, Rheem introduced “glass-lining”, a process that extended the life of the water tank by coating its interior with porcelain. An additional product line, “Rheemaire” central air conditioning and heater systems for homes, was added in 1956 and grew to be one of the company’s primary profit centers. Rheem purchased the Ruud Manufacturing Company in 1959 and continues to manufacture HVAC products under the Rudd brand name.
Rheem Manufacturing is owned by Paloma, a Japanese water heater manufacturer headquartered in Nagoya, Japan. The North American operation is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and is among the largest American HVAC and water heater manufacturers. In 2019, Rheem was announced as the winner of the “Smart Heating and Cooling Product of the Year” award for its innovative Rheem’s EcoNet® Smart Thermostat. The award was given by IoT Breakthrough which is an independent organization that highlights companies, technologies, and products in the global Internet-of-Things (IoT) market.
