Columbus Heat Pump Services

Heat pumps are a type of HVAC system that handles comfort year-round in the home. With a heat pump system, you’ll be able to efficiently heat and cool all areas of your residence – one system does it all! With regular maintenance, your heat pump will keep your family cool and cozy for many years. Buckeye Heating, Cooling & Plumbing offers quality heat pump equipment for installation and replacement, as well as heat pump repair and heat pump maintenance services to help you care for your system over its years of service in your home.

What Are Heat Pumps?

Heat pumps look very similar to traditional split system air conditioners – there is a unit indoors and one outdoors. When you have a heat pump system installed in your home, the outdoor unit is actually the heat pump, not the air conditioner; indoors is the air handler and indoor coil, where as many air conditioners use the furnace indoors, which houses the cooling coil and blower equipment to distribute cool air. Heat pumps differ from air conditioners also in function, as they are able to cool the home as well as heat it – an air conditioner is only able to provide cooling.

While heat pump systems for residential use are often configured as split systems, other options are available. Packaged heat pumps can be installed, which holds the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, and other components that would otherwise be split up between indoor and outdoor equipment in a split system. All heat pump parts are contained in one convenient cabinet installed outside your home.

How Do Heat Pumps Keep Homes Comfortable?

Over the summer season, heat pumps keep homes cool by removing excess heat that lingers within the indoor air supply. The system absorbs the heat then sends it outdoors and expels it into the environment. Air conditioners cool homes following the same process. Both systems use an evaporator coil, refrigerant, compressor, and condenser coil.

Air moves into the system from return ducts, first passing warm air across the evaporator coil. The refrigerant moving within the coil absorbs heat from the air, which also causes some moisture to condense and fall out of suspension, dehumidifying the home. The refrigerant carries the heat to the compressor, which pressurizes the refrigerant before sending it to the condenser coil. Once flowing through the condenser coil, the refrigerant releases the heat it holds, which passes into the air outside the home. The refrigerant will flow back to the evaporator coil to repeat the process as needed.

During the Ohio winter months, heat pumps function in reverse to deliver energy-efficient heating across the home. At the condenser coil, the refrigerant inside will absorb heat held within the outdoor air – even when it feels cool, there is still heat energy to be found in the air. The warmed refrigerant passes through the system to the indoor coil, which releases the refrigerant’s heat into the air circulating over the unit. The refrigerant cycles back to the condenser coil to repeat the heating process as much as it is needed.

Buckeye Heating, Cooling & Plumbing is happy to help you find the best heat pump system that fits the needs of your household as well as your budget.
